We at The University want to make sure that students are informed about data. The purpose of this page is to be transparent about three things:
- What kinds of student data are we collecting?
- What are we doing with your student data?
- What steps are we taking to protect it?
We understand that you might not have given us explicit permission to collect these data. We also know that you may not have the option to opt out or stop the collection of that data. Our hope is that by being transparent, you will trust that your data are in good hands.
What kinds of student data are we collecting?
While this isn’t a complete list, this should give you an idea of the types of data that are captured in the systems you use at University:
- time spent using learning tools
- performance on assignments
- course grades
- academic history
- demographics
- application data
- finance and financial aid information
- geo-location data (potentially)
What are we doing with your student data?
Our goal is to use these data to help you be successful as a student here at University. These are examples of things we might be doing to promote student success:
- reaching out to struggling students who may not know how to ask for help
- letting students know about tutoring, labs, and other academic services
- degree progress/completion (course suggestion)
What steps are we taking to protect your data?
Since we collect your data, it’s our responsibility to protect it and use it wisely. While no system is 100% secure, here are steps we take to protect your data:
- won’t use it for commercial purposes (just for your best interest and ours)
- data privacy training for staff/faculty
- following accepted standards for data security
- controlling who can/can’t access your data
